Once the sky was beautiful

⇧ SECTION LISTING

Once this life was neither moon nor sun, neither rose in turn
Life in the aura of Mars seated within Venus within Saturn
Awoke in awe below the row of fellow planets low above us
Venus ever bloomed in rays of eight or fewer petals like a lotus
In fact the flower’s crown could turn to four and draw a cross
And future faiths were henceforth honed from glorious gloss
But, before the east and west prevailed, in ages sages do regret,
Nothing, either sects or sciences, ever sought to seal the secret
That tells the tale that once the stars were all sustained by souls
In sparking waves of ions in skies devoid of any darkest holes
Today we feel a phantom fondness aimed at spirits now despised
When the souls beyond a man could dance and never be chastised
Mars and Venus, shameless mates inside the ring of Saturn’s halo,
Alone amid the myriad stars, would set the clock of heaven’s tempo
As both bestowed on bees and breeders ballets in loops of figure eight
So they showed the human hive the flight to flower foods that satiate
When the time we know as noon or midnight came, as Saturn would,
There appeared the horns of heaven ruling moonless crescents’ mood
Thus were cupped and tucked the double dancing deities after daylight
You remember though, we never slept, the dusk resenting darker night
At times alas, eternal days would part, as Mars and Venus loosened ties
Beasts and believers couldn’t fathom the fancy of firmaments flowing
From what would seem the tongue of Mars, as falls from pouring skies
At such a moment, one could have a hint at heaven’s headgear, trailing
For heaven’s sake, the drift of stars, as lovers’ tiffs, evaded deeper rifts
Mars and Venus hence returned to tighter bonds in leaps of higher lifts
See them, in Saturn’s rim, the great celestial snake within a crown of coils
The golden age survived against the bolts and spells until the last turmoils
Heaven’s great divide was not deferred amidst the deadly darts and waves
But the physics sourcing souls instead of ghouls can signal roads to graves
Whatever light can voodoo science affirm if darkest matter blinds the mind?
Lies that slander truth! A time will come, the likes of us will meet their kind
Those that stayed awake to watch the sky as man and planets stood aligned
Mars or Ares, Venus, lustrous Saturn; our senses, our soul and our spirit
Marvellous names for which we yearn; saintly selfless sadhus
Marigold garlands that Vishnu and Venus would bless
Many gods ago indeed the sky was beautiful
Most of all, so were we

Genesis of the poem

This text was to a large extent inspired by my keen interest in Immanuel Velikovsky's controversial theories about the interpretation of worldwide myths, which he considered as an attempt by an ancient people on Earth to describe actual cataclysmic cosmological events of their time. The preposterous and presumptuous aim of the poem somehow was to put his ideas into verse. You can have more information at the Velikovsky Encyclopedia and at the VArchive if you would like to study the topic further.
